OGC API Features Server for NLS Finland

In the world of geospatial, standards defined by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) are commonly used, for example for file formats and data transfer protocols.

One of the biggest ongoing changes is the so-called OGC API standard family. OGC APIs introduce a new generation of data transfer standards. These will eventually replace several standards currently heavily used in enabling spatial data flows (e.g. WFS, WMS and WMTS).

The National Land Survey of Finland (NLS) is responsible for a significant part of creating, managing and distributing basic geospatial data in Finland. The spatial data provided by the institute is among the most widely used in the country. Many of these datasets are highly critical for other functions in the society. Therefore, exceptionally high performance requirements also apply to data distribution and production.

Ubigu’s expertise has been at the core of implementing NLS’s new Java-based (open source) OGC API server software called Hakunapi. Amongst OAPIF services, it probably ranks globally as one of the best performance-wise. The Hakunapi server is heavily used, among other things, in the production of NLS’s open spatial data interfaces and at the core of the new topographic database production system.
